my human avatar Since the 90s, I’ve been a Neopets stan. Even though the site barely functions as they drag its corpse into the year 2021, I still read the Neopian Times and check my stocks. There is another virtual pet game though that I did not grow up with and only got introduced to in earnest a few years ago by a good friend. She grew up with Subeta Pets the way I had grown up with Neopets. And unlike Neopets, Subeta is not only still online but continually adding new features and items. The artwork is getting constantly updated, old wording and items that made sense in the early 2000s are being given a more critical look, and while it has its downsides, Subeta’s player experience isn’t the grindy slog of restocking madness I’m used to in Neopets.

my human avatar Want to make your pet a cool color? Play a few games, do a few quests (that allow you to use the search shop function might I add) and that Golden Ruffie Elixir is all yours! While you cannot dress up your pets in Subeta, you can dress up the human avatar that represents you in the world. And I mean it when I say this, if you can come up with an idea, there are probably already existing items to help you make it a reality. There is also a rich user-created content community and the Subeta team often spotlight pets and their custom pages.

All this sounds great but what do I, your humble webmaster, do when I visit Subeta? I will tell you. Much like other pet sites, it’s a make-your-own-fun style sandbox. My fun comes in the form of decorating my avatar, filling my pets’ treasure with thematic items, and more recently doing achievements.

It is not a very newbie-friendly site. I constantly harass my friend who introduced me to the world of Subeta because the site is a decade old and half its features are, unfortunately, hidden.
